How to Improve Your TOEFL Score, Section by Section

Updated October 2026  ·  8 min read

Short answer: Since 21 January 2026 the TOEFL iBT gives each section a band from 1 to 6, and your overall band is the average of the four. Find your weakest section first, practise each new task type directly (they are short and predictable), use a fixed pattern for Writing and Speaking, and spend most of your time on the section that pulls your average down.

TOEFL rewards preparation more than raw talent. The 2026 test uses a set of short, predictable task types, and the scoring is published. If you know how the new band scale is built and where you are losing marks, you can raise your band in a focused way rather than "studying English" in general and hoping for the best.

This guide covers the 2026 TOEFL iBT section by section: the 1 to 6 scale, the task types in each section, patterns for Speaking and Writing, and how to build a plan around your real weaknesses. For the full format table, see our TOEFL study plan.

1. How the 1 to 6 band scale works

Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking each receive a band from 1 to 6 in half-band steps. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. Each band lines up with a CEFR level: 3 is B1, 4 is B2, 5 is C1 and 6 is C2. During a two-year transition, score reports also show a comparable 0 to 120 score, so a requirement written the old way can still be checked.

Because the overall band is an average, one weak section costs you as much as one strong section earns. If three sections sit at 5 and Speaking is at 3.5, the average is 4.625, which rounds to 4.5. Lifting Speaking to 4.5 makes the average 4.875, which rounds to 5. That is why the fastest route to a higher band is almost always your weakest section, not your favourite one.

2. Find your weakest section first

Before making a plan, get four real numbers instead of a hunch. Start with the free TOEFL diagnostic for a quick estimate of your band and weakest section, then sit a full timed mock. Compare each section band with the band you need, and the biggest gap is where your next study hours belong.

Do mocks under realistic conditions: the full time limit, headphones for Listening and no pausing. Repeat one every couple of weeks to confirm the plan is working and to catch a section that has quietly stalled.

3. Reading: speed and accuracy on short items

Reading now has three task types: Complete the Words (fill in the missing letters of words in a short academic text), Read in Daily Life (notices, emails, schedules and similar everyday texts) and Read an Academic Passage. The section is adaptive, so how you do in the first part decides how hard the second part is.

Complete the Words rewards spelling and word-form knowledge, so learn word families (analyse, analysis, analytical) rather than single words, and check that each completed word fits the grammar of its sentence. For Read in Daily Life, look first for the purpose of the text and who it is for. For academic passages, skim for structure, then return to the exact lines for each question. A spaced-repetition vocabulary queue lifts all three task types at once.

4. Listening: catch the purpose, not every word

Listening has four task types: Listen and Choose a Response (pick the best reply to a short spoken line), Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement and Listen to an Academic Talk. Like Reading, it is adaptive.

The common trap is trying to note everything and missing the main idea. Listen for purpose and attitude: why is the speaker saying this, and how do they feel about it? For choose-a-response items, focus on the function of the line (a request, a complaint, an offer) and pick the reply that answers that function naturally. Train on real audio at natural speed rather than reading transcripts.

5. Writing: three tasks, three patterns

Writing has three task types. Build a Sentence asks you to put words in the right order to form a correct sentence, which tests word order in questions, clauses and phrasal verbs. Write an Email asks for a short message for a stated purpose. Write for an Academic Discussion asks you to add your view to an online class discussion.

Derstina's TOEFL Writing practice gives you instant AI feedback: an estimated band, the exact corrections and one thing to practise next. Treat the band as an estimate from one answer, not an official score.

6. Speaking: repeat accurately, then answer fully

Speaking has two task types. In Listen and Repeat you hear a sentence and say it back as accurately as you can. In Take an Interview you answer a series of questions with no preparation time.

Record yourself and listen back for hesitation and unclear sounds, then record again. Fluency and clear organisation matter more than rare vocabulary.

7. Build a targeted improvement plan

Rank your four section bands from weakest to strongest and give the weakest the most time. A workable weekly shape:

Let a study plan with an exam-date countdown keep the pressure realistic, so you always know how many weeks remain and whether your weakest section is closing the gap. Our guide what is a good TOEFL score explains how to set your target band.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the TOEFL iBT scored?

Since 21 January 2026 each of the four sections, Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, gets a band from 1 to 6 in half-band steps, and your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. Each band is aligned to a CEFR level (for example, 5 is C1). For a two-year transition, score reports also show a comparable 0 to 120 score.

What is a good TOEFL score for university?

It depends on the university and programme. Many universities that used to ask for about 80 to 100 on the 0 to 120 scale now state requirements around band 4 to 5 on the new scale, and some also set minimum section bands, especially for Speaking and Writing. Always confirm the exact requirement on your course's official page.

What changed in the TOEFL iBT in 2026?

The test is shorter and Reading and Listening are adaptive. New task types include Complete the Words and Read in Daily Life in Reading, Listen and Choose a Response in Listening, Build a Sentence and Write an Email in Writing, and Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview in Speaking. The integrated tasks of the older test are gone, and scores are reported on the 1 to 6 scale.

How can I improve my TOEFL Speaking score?

Practise the two task types directly. For Listen and Repeat, shadow short sentences until you can repeat them accurately with natural stress. For Take an Interview, answer in a steady pattern: a direct answer, one reason, one specific example and a short close, and speak for the whole response time. Record yourself and listen back for hesitation and unclear sounds.
