What English Level Do You Need for University, Work or a UK Visa?
"What level do I need?" is the question behind most English study plans. The answer depends on your goal, and for visas it depends on official rules that change. This guide sets out typical levels by goal, the current UK visa requirements, and the tests you can use to prove your level.
1. Quick Reference: Level by Goal
Use this table as a starting point. Visa levels are from GOV.UK at the time of writing; university and job levels are typical expectations, not rules.
| Goal | CEFR level | Source |
|---|---|---|
| UK Student visa, degree level or above | B2 | GOV.UK |
| UK Student visa, below degree level | B1 | GOV.UK |
| UK Skilled Worker visa, new applications from 8 January 2026 | B2 | GOV.UK |
| Undergraduate degree taught in English | Typically B2 | University admissions pages |
| Postgraduate or competitive degree (law, medicine, journalism) | Typically B2+ to C1 | University admissions pages |
| Office job in an international team | Typically B2 | Employer job descriptions |
| Client-facing, writing-heavy or leadership roles | Typically C1 | Employer job descriptions |
| Travel and everyday social use | A2 to B1 is usually enough | CEFR descriptors |

2. UK Visas: What GOV.UK Requires
For UK visas, the level is a legal requirement, so check GOV.UK for your route before you study or book a test. At the time of writing:
- Student visa: CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening for courses at degree level or above; B1 for courses below degree level. For degree-level study, your university can assess your English itself and may ask for a different test, but the standard must still be equivalent to B2.
- Skilled Worker visa: B2 for applications made on or after 8 January 2026. If you held a Skilled Worker visa before that date and are extending or updating it, B1 applies.
- Other routes such as family, settlement and citizenship have their own English rules. Look up your specific route on GOV.UK rather than relying on a general figure.
Two practical points catch many applicants out:
- Which test counts. When a visa needs a test, it usually has to be a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a Home Office approved provider, such as IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert SELT tests, Trinity College London SELT tests or PSI Skills for English UKVI. Standard IELTS Academic, TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test are not SELTs, although a university may accept them for its own admissions.
- Exemptions. Nationals of certain majority English-speaking countries, people with certain UK qualifications or an English-taught degree assessed by Ecctis, and some others do not need to prove their English. Check the exemption list for your route.

3. University: What Admissions Typically Expect
Universities set their own English requirements, usually as an exam score rather than a CEFR level. Typical patterns:
- Undergraduate: commonly around IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall, which is roughly B2.
- Postgraduate and competitive courses: often IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 or higher. IELTS places the C1 threshold between bands 6.5 and 7.
- Subject-specific minimums: many programmes also require a minimum in each skill, for example no band below 5.5 or 6.0. Writing is the one most likely to fall short.
- Pre-sessional courses: if you are slightly below the requirement, many universities offer an English course before the degree starts.
Requirements vary by country, institution and course, and they change. Always read the specific programme page. Our guide to English requirements to study abroad compares typical expectations in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Europe.
4. Work: What Employers Typically Expect
Employers rarely ask for a certificate, but job descriptions often mention a CEFR level or phrases like "fluent" or "professional working proficiency". Typical expectations:
- B1: roles where English is occasional, such as reading instructions, short emails, or simple customer interactions.
- B2: roles with regular meetings, emails, reports and calls in English. This is the most common requirement in international companies.
- C1: roles involving negotiation, presentations, writing for clients, managing people or anything where nuance and tone matter.
In interviews, employers judge your speaking more than any certificate. Being able to describe your experience clearly, handle follow-up questions and explain a problem matters more than perfect grammar. If English for a specific field is your goal, a targeted course, such as English for IT, is often faster than general English.
5. How to Prove Your Level
When you need evidence, these are the main options. Check that your university, employer or visa route accepts the specific test before you book.
| Test | Scoring | Approximate B2 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS (Academic, General Training, IELTS for UKVI) | Bands 1 to 9 | About 5.5 to 6.5 | Widely accepted; use IELTS for UKVI when a UK visa needs a SELT |
| TOEFL iBT | 1 to 6 from January 2026; a comparable 0 to 120 score is also reported during a two-year transition | 4 to 4.5 (per ETS) | Common for US universities; not a UK SELT |
| Duolingo English Test | 10 to 160 | About 100 to 125 (per Duolingo) | Taken online at home; accepted by many universities; not a UK SELT |
| Cambridge English (B2 First, C1 Advanced) | Cambridge English Scale | B2 First, 160 to 179 | Certificates do not expire, but many institutions want a recent result |
All equivalences are approximate, and each institution decides which scores it accepts. For a detailed comparison of formats, read IELTS vs TOEFL vs Duolingo English Test.
6. A Simple Plan From Here
- Write down your exact requirement, including the test, overall score and any per-skill minimums.
- Find your current level with a free level test. See how to find your English level for how to read the result.
- Measure the gap. If you are B1 and need B2, plan for several months of steady study; our B1 to B2 plan sets out 12 weeks of it.
- Switch to exam preparation once you are close to the level, so you learn the test format as well as the language.
- Leave a margin. Aim slightly above the minimum, because scores vary from day to day.
Derstina supports both stages: CEFR-levelled English courses from A1 to C2 to build the level, then exam drills and full timed mocks for IELTS, TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test, with a personalised study plan that counts down to your exam date.
Frequently Asked Questions
What English level do I need for a UK Student visa?
GOV.UK currently sets CEFR B2 for courses at degree level or above, and B1 for courses below degree level. For degree-level study your university can assess your English itself, but it must still be equivalent to B2. Check GOV.UK for the current rules and exemptions before you apply.
What English level do I need for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
For applications made on or after 8 January 2026, GOV.UK requires B2. If you held a Skilled Worker visa before that date and are applying to extend or update it, B1 applies. Requirements can change, so confirm on GOV.UK.
What English level do universities require?
Many English-taught undergraduate programmes typically ask for around B2, often expressed as IELTS 6.0 to 6.5. Postgraduate and competitive courses often ask for IELTS 6.5 to 7.0 or more, around the C1 threshold. Each programme sets its own requirement, including per-skill minimums.
Is B2 English enough for a job?
B2 is the most common requirement for roles with regular meetings, emails and reports in English. Roles involving negotiation, client writing, presentations or management typically expect C1. Employers usually judge your speaking in the interview more than a certificate.
Which English test should I take to prove my level?
Choose the test your university, employer or visa route accepts. IELTS is widely accepted, TOEFL is common for US universities, and the Duolingo English Test is accepted by many universities. For UK visas that need a test, you usually need a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI.
